Gear Review: WS2812B Addressable LED Strips & Power Supplies

If you’ve tackled our NeoPixel Desk Clock or you’re planning a massive interactive room lighting setup, you’ve likely encountered WS2812B addressable LEDs (commonly known by Adafruit’s brand name, “NeoPixels”).

But jump on Amazon, and you’ll see a dozen brands offering seemingly identical LED strips. Which one should you buy? And how do you power them without burning down your house? We’ve compared two of the most popular strips and a reliable power supply.

The Strips: BTF-LIGHTING vs. ALITOVE

Addressable LED strips usually differ in a few key ways: PCB thickness, adhesive quality, weatherproofing (IP rating), and connector reliability.

1. BTF-LIGHTING WS2812B RGB 5050SMD Strip

The Enthusiast’s Choice

Why it matters for Beginners: BTF-LIGHTING is widely regarded as one of the most reliable LED strip manufacturers. Their strips usually come with pre-soldered 3-pin JST-SM connectors, which means you won’t have to break out the soldering iron just to test them. Why it matters for Pros: The underlying flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) is typically thicker on BTF strips. This means less voltage drop across long runs and better heat dissipation, which prolongs the life of the LEDs.

2. ALITOVE WS2812B Addressable LED Strip (16.4ft)

The Budget Contender

Why it matters for Beginners: It’s incredibly cost-effective. If you are going to chop a strip up into tiny pieces for a dozen different small Arduino projects (like our plant waterer or traffic light), ALITOVE is a great bargain. Why it matters for Pros: The adhesive backing on budget strips often fails after a few months, especially under shelves. Pros will likely need to buy separate mounting channels or superior 3M VHB tape to keep these strips in place permanently.

The Power Supply: Why You Can’t Use a Phone Charger

A single WS2812B LED can draw up to 60mA at full white brightness. A standard 16.4ft roll with 300 LEDs can draw an astonishing 18 Amps (90 Watts) at 5V! Your 1A or 2A phone charger will literally melt if you try to power a full strip with it.

The Sweet Spot for Medium Projects

Why it matters for Beginners: This 10A (50W) power supply comes with a 5.5mm x 2.1mm DC barrel jack adapter. This allows you to screw your positive and ground wires directly into a terminal block without needing to solder a custom power connector. It provides enough juice to power about 150-160 LEDs at full white, or a full 300-LED strip displaying dynamic, colorful animations (which rarely draw maximum current). Why it matters for Pros: While professionals running thousands of LEDs will opt for large, metal-cage Mean Well power supplies, this brick format is much safer for desktop projects since there are no exposed AC mains terminals.

Final Verdict

If you are building a permanent installation (like under-cabinet lighting or a desk edge), spend the few extra dollars on the BTF-LIGHTING strips for better copper traces. If you are prototyping, the ALITOVE strip is an excellent budget buy. Just make sure to pair either with a robust 5V power supply!
