Lesson 197: Introduction to TinyML (AI on the Edge)

TinyML Hero Image

Look, the cloud is great. But sending every single temperature reading or accelerometer twitch to an AWS server just so a Python script can tell your Arduino that a door opened is like mailing a letter to your neighbor to ask to borrow a cup of sugar. Plus, the moment your Wi-Fi drops because someone sneezed near the router, your “smart” device suddenly gains the IQ of a brick.

Enter TinyML (Tiny Machine Learning). Instead of relying on the cloud, we cram the neural network directly onto the microcontroller. Yes, the same chip you usually use to blink an LED can now recognize voice commands, detect anomalies in machine vibration, or identify a bird’s song. Magic blue smoke aside, it’s pretty incredible.

What You Need

To run TinyML, your standard Uno won’t cut it. You need a bit more processing power. Here are two excellent boards for the job:

The Workflow

  1. Collect Data: Gather samples (e.g., audio of you saying “ON” and “OFF”).
  2. Train the Model: Use a platform like Edge Impulse to train the neural network.
  3. Deploy: Export the model as a C++ library.
  4. Run Inference: Include the library in your Arduino sketch and let the board make decisions locally.

Next lesson, we’ll build a voice-activated relay!
